“The tall straight cypresses in double row / troop from San Guido down to Bolgheri…” – mentioning Carducci’s famous verses is enough to evoke the timeless charm of this little Tuscan village nestled between golden vineyards and the sea-scented coast. Located in Alta Maremma only two hours from The Mall Florence, Bolgheri is a real gem which in autumn glows with warm colours and reveals its most authentic side: quiet, elegant and bewitching.
As soon as you enter the town, you will see the spectacular Viale dei Cipressi: a five-kilometre-long road which invites visitors to discover its beauty between gentle bends and about 2,500 cypress trees all the way up to the ancient gate of the village.
As you pass the tower of the medieval castle ‘Della Gherardesca’, time seems to have stood still. Its cobbled streets wind through artisan shops, small art galleries and wine shops that smell of wood and wine.
For a typical lunch, the Enoteca Tognoni is the best choice: traditional dishes from Maremma accompanied with a glass of Bolgheri Superiore. In the afternoon, we recommend visiting one of the largest wineries in the area such as Ornellaia or Tenuta Guado al Tasso.
If you want to stop for the night, make sure you visit the neighbouring villages before you leave: the town of Castagneto Carducci where the poet spent his youth or the splendid Casale Marittimo. Also, from November to May, you can experience a “real Tuscan safari” at the Rifugio Faunistico Padule of Bolgheri: a WWF oasis extending for more than 500 hectares where you can admire cranes, herons and sea eagles among reeds and ponds.
A town rich in art, nature and flavours, Bolgheri enchants the senses and nourishes the soul – a little paradise at all times of the year.
