The best activities to experience the sea along Liguria’s Riviera di Ponente

WHALE WATCHING
Dolphins playing, leaping out of the water, sperm whales diving exposing their immense tails, monumental fin whales and their spouts. We are not in the Pacific Ocean, but in the Pelagos Sanctuary, an 87,500km² protected marine area, which extends to the Giens peninsula.
Golfo Paradiso whale watching excursions depart from Sanremo Old Port, a unique, engaging experience that will thrill to young and old. Excursions, by motorboat, last about 4 hours (from 12.00 noon to 4.00 – 4.30pm), and are scheduled for 22, 27 and 29 June, and every Tuesday and Thursday in July, August and September.
Research expeditions with Tethys, a non-profit organization supporting marine conservation and protection also depart from Sanremo: six days (from Monday to Sunday), aboard the Pelagos motorsailer, helping researchers with data collection (from mid-May to early October). A unique opportunity to make incredible sightings while contributing to the survival of these fantastic creatures.

SURFING
If you’re a surfing enthusiast, there’s no need to go to Hawaii or California: a little more than an hours from Sanremo is Varazze, considered among the best 10 places in Europe to ride the waves.

CAPO MORTOLA MARINE CONSERVATION AREA
Where the Ligurian Sea laps the French Riviera, lies the Capo Mortola marine conservation area. A true oasis of beauty, where Pianeta Blu organizes scuba dives – from March to December, with departures at 9.00am and 2.00pm – snorkeling trips – from June to September, departures at 9.30am and 2.30pm – and kayak and paddle excursions, from May in October from 9.30am to 1.00pm or from 1.30 to 5.00pm.  Diving and snorkeling tours leave from the Port of Garavan in Menton (just over half an hour from Sanremo), while kayak and paddle outings leave from the beach of the beautiful Hanbury Botanic Gardens.
